Sneaker Restoration: What It Costs and When It Is Worth It
Last updated September 2026. Written by the SNKRR BAR lab in Memphis, TN, where our team has cleaned and restored over 31,000 pairs.
The short version: a clean costs a fraction of a replacement. The question is not price, it is whether the materials can come back, and that depends on what is actually wrong with the pair.
What drives the price of a restoration
- Material. Leather and rubber are forgiving. Suede, nubuck, mesh and knit take longer and need a gentler process, so they cost more.
- What is wrong. Surface dirt is a clean. Yellowed soles, deep staining, dye transfer and midsole work are restoration, and each adds labor.
- How far gone it is. A pair worn twice and a pair pulled out of a closet after three years are different jobs.
- Speed. Standard turnaround runs 17 to 30 business days. Rush service costs extra because your pair moves to the front of the bench.
- Shipping. Mail-in includes round-trip shipping, insured at $100 per pair each way.
Current pricing for every tier is on the services page, where you tell us about each pair and see the cost before you book.
When restoration is worth it
- The pair is hard to replace. Retros that no longer restock, collabs, anything where resale runs well above the clean.
- The problem is cosmetic, not structural. Dirt, stains and yellowing come back. Separated soles and blown-out heels are a cobbler job, not a cleaning job.
- You have several pairs. Shipping one box with three pairs beats three separate jobs.
- The sole is yellowed but the upper is fine. Oxidation reversal is one of the highest-return fixes there is, and you can even do that one at home.
When it is not
Be honest about the pair. Structural failure, heavy sole separation, crumbling midsoles on older retros, and materials that have already been sanded or bleached will not return to new. We tell people this before taking the job. A restoration brings a pair back to the best state the materials allow, which is not the same as factory condition.
Do it yourself or send it in?
Do it yourself when the pair is dirty rather than damaged, and you have the right formula for the material. All Purpose Cleaner for leather, mesh, canvas and rubber. Swade Cleaner for suede and nubuck. Bounce Back Sauce for yellowed soles.
Send it in when the pair is valuable, the damage is layered, or you would rather not learn on a grail. Every pair gets its own diagnosis, and it is restored with the same Solutions we sell you.
